Acupuncture for Children

Children and even small babies respond surprisingly well to acupuncture treatments. We understand that parents don't immediately think of acupuncture treatment. After all, children are often apprehensive of needles, but in practice, the needling is surprisingly manageable. Acupuncture for children is child-friendly and completely safe.

When can acupuncture be applied to children?

The immune system of small children is still developing, making them much more vulnerable to external influences than adults. Acupuncture can offer relief or cure for many common childhood diseases and ailments. Consider problems with the digestive system or the immune system, but acupuncture can also help with concentration disorders such as ADHD. The advantage of acupuncture is that the child is not exposed to medications or antibiotics. In more serious conditions this is necessary, but for initial ailments, acupuncture, or acupuncture in combination with other natural means, may suffice. A number of child complaints that can be treated with acupuncture include:

Chronic colds, chronic ear infection, coughing, asthma, eczema, allergies, diarrhea, constipation, bedwetting, sleep problems, low resistance

How does acupuncture work in children?

Acupuncture in children is applied with the utmost caution. The acupuncturist will first ask the parents about the child's feeding and defecation patterns, among other things. The vaccinations the child has received are also discussed. The child, and the parent, are made comfortable by the acupuncturist before treatment begins. For the treatment of small children, extra thin needles are used which they hardly feel. The child can simply stay on the parent's lap during the treatment. How many treatments are needed depends on the nature of the complaints and how the child responds to the treatment. In general, children respond very quickly and well to acupuncture treatments, so not many treatments are needed.

Acupuncture without needles

Acupuncture can also be applied without needles. In a special form of acupuncture, called Shonishin, three types of blunt needles are used that do not go through the skin. Also, massaging certain pressure points can be sufficient to treat children. Sometimes the acupuncturist will ask you to massage your child at home as well.
