Fertility Enhancement through Acupuncture

Couples who undergo IVF (in vitro fertilisation) or ICSI (intra cytoplasmatic sperm injection) are only reimbursed for a limited number of attempts. In fertility, the woman's hormonal balance plays a significant role. The woman's cycle is a reflection of how the hormones in her body function. Therefore, the progress of this cycle is a crucial source of information for acupuncturists. From this temperature curve, we can read a significant part of the hormonal balance.

Practically all aspects of menstruation are important: how does menstruation start, is there a lot of blood loss or very little, and what color is the blood? All of this tells us something about hormone production and, therefore, fertility. Based on all this data, a treatment tailored to the woman is devised using acupuncture and Chinese herbs to ensure the best possible progression of the cycle and prepare the woman's body for pregnancy.

Chance of Pregnancy

German researchers suggest that when acupuncture can be applied in addition to regular treatment, the chances of women becoming pregnant through IVF treatment are significantly increased. The scientists from the Christian Lauritzen Institute in Ulm used acupuncture treatments on 160 women just before and just after the replacement of the fertilized egg. Half of the total of 160 participating women received the additional treatment, which significantly increased the number of pregnancies.

The group treated with acupuncture received needles in the stomach and the large intestine meridian, as well as in the ear meridians, 25 minutes before the replacement to enhance the blood flow and guide energy to the uterus, while simultaneously achieving a calming effect and a stabilization of the endocrine system. The control group only received the replacement. The women in both groups were on average 32 years old and had previously undergone 2 IVF treatments.

Of the women without acupuncture, the treatment resulted in a pregnancy in 21 women (26.3%), while 42.5% of the women who were treated with acupuncture became pregnant. The research will be published in this month's Fertility and Sterility. It's unclear why the number of pregnancies increases, but according to researcher Wolfgang E. Paulus, the chosen puncture points could counteract uterine contractions that normally occur during the implantation of the embryo, thereby increasing the chances of success.
